Surgical complications do happen, and they happen to every surgeon in every specialty. Be aware of any potential complication and the potential cost involved in treating a complication before consenting to any surgical procedure. If you can't afford a complication, then you can't afford cosmetic surgery.
Fortunately, complications are rare. My complication rate is low and well in keeping with my top peers. I attribute this to meticulous attention to detail, performing only tried and tested techniques, and attending regular congresses both nationally and internationally.
I operate in attested operating theatres with an Intensive Care Unit close at hand. I enjoy close ties with top class specialists from a wide medical spectrum should the need for referral arise.
Below are some of the potential complications that can occur with any surgery, it is by no means complete. After consultation and examination procedure specific complications will be discussed with my patients in detail:
Patient related complications
Certain types of patients have a higher risk of complications, notably infection and perfusion (blood supply) problems. For example:
- Diabetics
- Patients on Steroids and other Immuno-suppressant medication
- Patients who are immunocompromised
- Smokers
- Patients with Heart Disease and Vasculopathies
- Hypertension
- A history of previous surgery in the area
- Obese Patients
Surgery related
The complications mentioned below may necessitate a return to the operating room.
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Seroma
- Perfusion (Blood supply) problems
Other complications
- Anaesthetic related complications - feel free to discuss these with any of the anaesthesiologists that I use in my practice.
- Local Anaesthetic Complications
- Deep Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolus
- Fat embolism
- Nerve injury
- Atelectasis and pneumonia
- Patients with a tendency toward Keloid scars
